Most of us have had more colds than we’d like to remember. But did you know that if your immune system didn’t fight off the germs, they would eventually kill you? It’s the same with sin. The obvious difference is that catching a cold isn’t any fun at all while sinning can be lots of fun, for a season. But unless you fight against them, they will both eventually kill you.
But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.Within the very DNA of every sin is a strategy to destroy your life, so don’t act as if it’s harmless. It’s like a virus that’s designed to keep you from fulfilling your God-given calling. It can drive a wedge between you and God.
James 1:14-15
I’m not saying that we have the ability to never sin after we’re saved. Of course, we will. Our fallen nature prevents us from living a sinless life. Only the Son of God could live a sinless life. All of us mess up from time to time in one way or another. What I’m talking about here is the willful act of habitual sin, which is often premeditated.
The apostle Peter warned us to abstain from such things.
Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul. Here are 5 ways to combat the virus of sin:
1 Peter 2:11
- If you’re struggling with ongoing sin in your life, determine in your heart that you’re going to break free from it.
- When you mess up, repent and ask for forgiveness immediately.
- Ask God for help, in Jesus’ name. Bring it to God in prayer as many times as it takes to break free from your addictive behavior.
- Dig into the Word of God daily. Reading the Word of God for yourself can convict your soul (Hebrews 4:12).
- And finally, don’t just read or hear the word, do what it says (James 1:22).
