In Mark 10:17-18, we read about an unnamed man who ran up, knelt before Jesus and asked Him “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” The Jews didn't address a Rabbi as "good teacher", which showed this man's reverence for Jesus as a spiritual teacher.
Jesus responded by asking him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone". Was Jesus telling the man that He was not good? No, not at all. Since Jesus was fully man and fully God, Jesus knew He was good.
So then, why did Jesus respond this way?
Jesus wasn't saying that He wasn't good. Instead, He was challenging the man to decide if he believed that Jesus was who he claimed to be, the Son of the living God.
