Shadow of Christ: The tents of Israel

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
The second chapter of the book of Numbers is a perfect example of how there are no unnecessary words in the bible. I believe that all scripture is God-breathed and therefore every word in the bible has a God-given purpose.

But on the surface, it’s hard to see the importance of Numbers chapter 2 which is an entire chapter that provides a census of the tribe of Israel while they were camped in the wilderness on their journey to the promised land. It’s also about God telling Israel, through Moses, how to set up their camp.

So how is this important?

It’s important because it’s a shadow of Christ. If you draw a picture of the tents of the tribes of Israel, in proportion to the size of the tribes, as described in Numbers 2, and place them as God instructed around the tent of meeting, which is in the center of the camp what you discover is fascinating. If you were to look at an aerial view of the camp from the east, you would see that the camp was set up in the shape of a cross.

Note that the Levites were camped around the tent of meeting and the Lord commanded Moses not to include the tribe of Levi in the census.

Those of you who have read the entire bible have slogged through long passages that have probably bored you to tears because you didn’t understand the relevance of it to your own life. I know this has happened to me more than once. I hope that this message gives you a new perspective on the word of God and an appreciation that every single word of scripture has a God-given purpose.

God bless,
Daniel
