For many of us, Christmas is the most frantic season of the year. We shop until we drop. We spend hours trying to find just the right gifts for our friends and loved ones. Then we wrap them in pretty paper with ribbon and a bow. But did you ever wonder where the tradition of giving each other gifts on Christmas day began?
The first Christmas gifts were given to Jesus by the kings of the East. I find it interesting that their gifts say something about who Jesus is. The gold pointed to Christ’s role as King; the frankincense to His role as Priest; and the myrrh pointed to His role as Savior and to His redeeming death.
In addition to their spiritual significance, these gifts also had great financial value. I believe they were God’s way of providing Joseph and Mary with the resources they needed to flee to Egypt in order to keep Jesus safe from King Herod.
As you give and receive your Christmas presents this year, keep in mind that the greatest gift ever given was our Lord Jesus Christ. And then share the good news of this gift with others.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
